2026 NYS RATES/SURVEY TYPES
Rates are calculated based on the type of survey, level of complexity, location, size and age of the vessel. There are no travel expenses and NYS typically does not charge for return visits if necessary. A verbal report will be given the same day and our comprehensive written reports are typically completed within 24-48 hours. Most common surveys:
Pre-Purchase Marine Survey: – The most requested and comprehensive survey offered. If you are buying a pre-owed vessel, this is the survey you want/need. Typically required by both insurance companies and financial institutions. NYS charges $28 per foot which includes an in water inspection, out of water inspection as well as sea trial. Survey time: 4-6 hours, depending on vessel.
Insurance Survey: – Performed as a requirement for insurance companies to determine a vessels acceptable risk and value. Focus is on the vessels integrity and safety for its intended use. Insurance companies typically ask for this survey every few years to bind coverage. NYS charges $22 per foot for insurance surveys. Survey time: 3-4 hours, depending on vessel.
What happens the day of survey?
“We strongly encourage our clients to attend the survey and ask questions! Attending the survey will give you first hand knowledge of your vessel and make your boating experience more enjoyable”.

In Water: This portion of the survey consists of the vessels structural components, decking, ground tackle, electronics, safety systems, plumbing, electrical wiring and panels as well as overall condition and appearance. An engine and generator run up is performed for control function and basic engine and transmission operation.
On Land: This portion focuses on the structural components above and below the waterline. Including; rudder system, propellers & shafts, through hull fittings, sacrificial anodes, transducers, swim platforms and other externally mounted items. Hulls are sounded and checked for voids, delamination, blistering, gel coat and paint condition, previous repairs and existing damage.
Sea Trial: This portion allows the purchaser a chance to experience the vessel in actual operating conditions. We will continue to check systems for functionality (chart plotter, VHF radio, radar, sound systems, auto-pilot etc). Engines are run at various intervals and varying speeds and rpm.
Summary/Verbal Report: At the conclusion of the survey, we discuss the vessel, areas of concern and answer additional questions you may have. A full written report suitable for yourself, insurance companies and financial institutions will be produced and emailed within 24-48 hours. Upon receipt of the written report, if you have further questions we will be happy to go over them with you.
